Project 11: Mounting An Exhibition (Scale)

This is my work of the whole semester and i feel that i had improved compare to the beginning of the semester from drawing and coloring technique to architecture understanding. And I will improve more in the future :)

 My portfolio:

Words that i feel important to be a successful architect

What I drawing is roof structure of a building

Project 9: (G) Integrated Project (Angle)

This is the site plan and the purple roof is our design the pavilion
In this project we are given a chance to design the Pavilion that will represent USM identity and this project also not only about the aesthetic of the pavilion but also many aspect such as it build-able(possible to be build) , the building maintenance , soil and most important is its impact to the surrounding environment. The site given is the convocation site which not exceed 2500meter square and it is one of the most green place in USM as there are many trees that are mature. Therefore allocating our design at the site is very important as it involving cutting trees and building foundation. After many time of choosing ,changing and renovating our design, lastly we came out with a satisfying design.Firstly we discuss about the theme of our pavilion accordingly after we interpret the mission and vision of USM and so we came out a final decision that is TRANSFORMATION. And this lead to our design to be a circle shape as circle represent a continual process and transformation involve with continual improvement. so after many refinement we came out with this:
This is our model of our pavilion

Our pavilion's roof is flower petal like-shaped as flower have sweet sense of smell and it able to influence people from afar toward it and make people know about its existence just like USM besides that flower also
represent sustainable which is one of the USM priority
The hot air will rise and escape from the sky-lite's opening while
cold air will flow into pavilion from the bottom(Stack effect)
What is fascinating about our design is we equip our roof with hydrolic system where when in the morning , the roof will open and giving hot air rise more effectively so that the temperature insides the building is as cold as outside. The reason we using this methode to cool down the building temperature because the surrounding having a lot of shading from trees and we found out from our site analysis that it is quite cold and comfortable even in the evening and noon. Therefore we think that it is acceptable for us to build a open roof pavilion.

Pavilion with a controllable open and close roof is exactly showing people about TRANSFORMATION and this will successfully make a stand for the name of USM by having this kind of technology in the building.
This are the interior design of our pavilion:

Project 8:Object Connection( Jointing)

The Sketches Design Concept

The font that I used is using arrow to form my name. The reason I used arrow is because from project 1 to project 8, these project had guide me more closer to what I want to be.

Besides that, arrow also represent the flows of idea. Sometime when we out of idea, we need to make a U-turn to turn back and starts over again and sometime when we stuck in the middle, we need to just turn around to makes thing look better.

Furthermore, we also used arrow as directory such as the compass, wind flow, sunlight direction, length. Many of our project involve arrow. Therefore I used arrow to design my name.

Procedure
Firstly,my puzzle located in row H, number 7,the person on my left is Lim Zhong Sheng and the person on my right is Goh Zhang Rong, while the person above me is Loo Shu Jye(rainbow color at jointing) and the person below me is Annas Johana(yellow color with dots at jointing). After they discuss about what theme they wanted to use as our name background, that is we using bricks color as our background color compare to the upper row of ours that is row G which is using rainbow color as background color.

Firstly,we started to draw the shape of the bricks on our poly foam board then after drawn finish, we started to cut it down with rectangular jointing but for the upper and lower part jointing we still remain the same that is 4 cm radius of circle.

After that We started to color our background with 6 type color of acyclic that is black, white, dark brown, brown, light brown, yellowish brown.

I had added my logo, sketch of HBP,sketch of my face ,my cube and my mask ,including the geometry design using basic shape that is triangular.

Project 7: Analysis of GTWH Building(Presentation)

GEORGE TOWN WORLD HERITAGE
This time, the project is related to George Town World  Heritage. Its mainly located in gorge town and it is grouped into two categories that is core zone and buffer zone. The building that we choose are St.Xavier's Institution , Convent Light Street and Madrasha Hamid Arabi and we group 1 had chosen education as our theme. This project is a group project which consist of 15 person. We are group 1 and having Low Jin Yee as the group leader who lead us.Basically to touch some of the background of the building we chosen, the Convent Light Street is a Girl's school while St.Xavier Institution is a Boy's school and long before Madrasha Hamid Arabi becoming a building for residential purpose, the building is used as a place to teach Islamic teaching for boys and girls.
ST. XAVIER'S INSTITUTION
CONVENT LIGHT STREET

THE PICTURE OF BUILDINGS WE CHOSEN
MADRASHA HAMID ARABI

The location of the three building
From the map, you can see that the distance between Convent Light Street and St Xavier's Institution is just a walking distance.By crossing the flyover at Lebuh Farquhar you can reach St Xavier's Institution from Convent Light Street at no time.

 The Convent Light
Street
As you can see , Convent Light Street is built in 1852 and it is the oldest convent girl's school not only in Penang but the whole Malaysia and having a chance to visit the school is a very rare chance as you need go through some school procedure and need to have approval from the headmister so we are so grateful that as we arrived Convent Light Street about 2.30pm the headmister allow us to take photo around the convent area as the student had finished their class (and the headmister wont allow us to even walk around the school if the students are having their lesson as this will causes disturbance to the students according to the headmister) .

From the picture above, you can see that the Convent Light Street is located near the coast therefore undergo the nature phenomena that is sea breeze and land breeze. This is also one of the reason the school is always windy.
when u come in to the school from the front door, you will see this white building that its design is unique which having english style architecture.

The picture above is the site plan of the
Convent Light Street

Vegetation in Convent Light Street

After you come into the convent light street and after a short walk you will see there are rows of vegetation along the road as the picture above. From here you can see many type of vegetation around the Convent school and the maturity of the plants also varies from one section to another section.

As you can see the picture above is the largest tree that located in the middle of the Convent school and in my opinion due to the branches and leaves of the tree that is overwhelming  and causes decrease of the natural light entering the school yard, therefore they decided to cut down all the brunches and leaves of the tree leaving the trunk at there.

This is the plants that having at the backyard of convent light street. There are many small plant at the backyard so that the plant wont provide too much shading to the area as they need sunlight for natural lighting for study purpose in the morning.Even the big tree also do not have much leaves on it.
After the backyard, you can see the sea and in the morning the wind blow from the sea. Therefore the convent light street is undergoing sea breeze and land breeze and providing passive ventilation for the school.

Besides that, having the plants around the school enable to lower the surrounding temperature so that it can achieve thermal comfort for the student to be able to concentrate on their studies.
There are also trees and shed providing shading for people at the courtyard

 Facilities for disabled people

There are also ramp in front of the toilet for disability people and ramp also can be found commonly around the school.

Uniqueness Of The Building In Convent Light Street
From this building we notice that there are special feature where the window design is hardly found in nowadays, the window glass having some coloured texture on it and forming a figure of man. This kind of design had bring us back to the past where art on the window glasses is still being emphasize .
The Crafted Colunm

There are also some crafted design on the column of the building and we found out that the design of the staircase and the window are also not design as present day.

The Staircase that made out of wood yet still stable and
safe to be use.
The opening design is almost covered the 70%
of the wall to maximize the air ventilation as
there is always windy

St.Xavier's Institution
St.Xavier's Institution is a boy's school since 1852 and named after Saint Francis Xavier.Below is the front view, back view and the left side view of the St. Xavier Institution.

This is a draw of St Xavier's Institution in 1954 found in the main hall of
St.Xavier Institution

The view of St.Xavier's Institution from setilite
The picture below show the plan of St.Xavier's Institution
 Vegetation In The School
Just in front of the school there are many type of plant with different height but most of the plant doesn't higher than the building itself so that the natural sunlight is not blocked and can be used as passive light source for study purpose
There are also vegetation just beside the class room to provide some shading and thermal comfort.
There area also a small garden at the courtyard that just located beside the main hall. The height of the tree that reached second floor also not much as you can see. This is also due to need of passive light purpose.

Design of the building

As you can see the doors around the school are actually made by metal and painted in green colour and the structure is not well maintained in my opinion. The design of the door and window actually give me a feel of creepy and something like a prison like design. This is related to some historical story as the original building of the school had been destroyed in world war II which had been used as the naval headquarters of Imperial army of Japan in 1941 and this new building was reconstructed and finished in 1952.

While for the ventilation purpose, they had design the opening above the door to allow hot air flowing out and allowing the cold air come into the building thru the lower opening.

The size of the opening is larger than usual and this kind of opening is hardly find nowadays
As you can see the opening as shown below the picture is almost as same size for our door nowadays. This shows that how they emphasize the passive air ventilation as St.Xavier's Institution is located just opposite the Convent Light Street, which means they also quite close to the coast. Therefore the building will have some effect of sea breeze and land breeze

The door can be open widely and if the door is closed up the air can still flow from the opening above

The design of staircase also convenience for the disabled people to go up to second floor

There are also quite a few statue of St. John Baptist de La Salle around the school

There are also some historical item can be found in St.Xavier Institution

Madrasha Hamid Arabi
Madrasha Hamid Arabi once was an Islamic religious school and can contaminate 70 student, that is 40 boy students using the upper floor while 30 girl student using ground floor for Islamic religious study purpose.

By walking around for 5 minute you will arrive the Kapitan Keling Mosque. Therefore in my opinion the building is somehow related to each other in other word the planning of location is related to each other. This provides convenience for the students to go for mosque for praying purpose.
Besides that you can also found a temple just besides the Madrasha Hamid Arabi. This show that in the past there are harmony exist and even we having different culture and religious and yet they can still live peacefully.I really amazed as we do not need to ask people about it and the building itself can speak the past and let us learn from the past.

Vegetation

On the left side of the building is covered by many trees and the height of the trees is higher than the building itself. This is to provides shading and thermal comfort for the occupants.

While on the right side of the building also covered by many vegetation but not higher than the building so from the picture you can see that there are sunlight shining into the building to provides some natural light.

Design Of The Building
There are some craft on the wall as the decorative and nowadays the building does not emphasize on these feature. These apply of art into building can mostly find in the old time building.

But what was disappointing is the structure of the building has been damaged as you can see from the picture
As time pass by the decorative also destroyed as you can see there are suppose have a flower craft on this circle but now it has gone.

The roof design also quite unique as nowadays they did not use those material as the main material for overhang.

Now Site Visit Had Done, And The Game Just Begin...

Day One..

We discuss about what should
we do and some composition of the paper.
Besides that,we also search some info from the Internet to fill up our spaces on the 4 A1 paper. And then we starts drawing..everything was going well and in schedule until the arrival of day 2.

These are the draw that i drawn in the first day

Day Two
I found out that the paper that we using was very low quality as when there are water droplet on it , the whole paper will almost have a hole on it.Therefore , after informing our paper was not cartilage paper...that was a big bang for my head..we need to redraw what we had drawn in the first day..and I thought I can starts colour it by tonight but it was not as planned.we only drawn finish some part of the paper we have.

Day Three
We finally started to color the drawing without fear of the paper will break apart due to massive of water is used.

everybody was trying their best to give the best they can to make the draw looks beautiful.

It was hard to me as I still not very confident in water color and coloring the draw is time killer.
We also stayed overnight to finish most of the drawing that needed to be color

The result is quite satisfying for me at least the one that I color that is the garden of St.Xavier, the statue that i drawn still having their shape after colored..phew..
This was drawn and color
by our group member Sha Sha

 On Day Four,The Last day
We starts our lettering in the kind of rush....but eventually we able to finish it all
