PROJECT 5 :THE MASK (SPECULATIVE)

THE MASK

           For general explaination, mask is usually worn on face and used for ceremony,carnival and festival .In this project,we are ordered to create a mask that shows our feeling and in my opinion, the mask can be represents and shows the true feeling deep inside a person's heart.In contrasts, mask also may be a tool that putting a fake feeling on our face.

PROCESS OF DOING THE MASK

When I saw 'make a mask' , I was quite headache because I totally don't have any idea how to make a mask with a proper steps, but after watching some video clip from youtube and some infomation from lecturer thru facebook I have some idea of how to make it. Actually after done the mask , I really want to thanks my friends(Goh Zhang Rong,Kung Wei Chiat,Neo Jun Chen,Lee Kuan Fei,Lim Chong Sheng,...ect as there are many friend involved for buying material and doing mask) for they had helped me to done my mask as for this project is totally impossible done by myself. I had make around 3 masks that failed to be a mask but thanks god that the last mask that created was good enough(by having the shape of mask) to be a mask :)

    For first and second layer, we had used wet tissues as the basic layer on our face so that the tissue can takes the shape of our face more accuratly compare to other paper material such as wet newspaper or A4 paper.After covered all the part of our face with wet tissues, my friend had used the hair dryer to dry up most of the tissues on my face. Then, we starts cover up the tissues by appling the wet newspeper with glue as the third and forth layer of the mask. Again after finish cover my face with the newspapers, they dry up the wet newspapers again. Finally we apply A4 paper as the final layer of the mask so that the surface is more smooth and easier to be coloured.The whole process of putting and drying the layer of tissues and paper on my face is taking about 1hour and 30 minutes long time and this almost break my neck as i just lay on the hard floor but what make it nice was I actually was asleep and when I was wake up by my friends, the mask is almost done... hahaha... so back to the point, I continue do make my mask dryer after taking it off my face by using hair dryer.Besides that I also put it for about one day long for it to totally dry and hard.
So here is what it looks when the mask is completed:

The Concept design and Idea

Design:

After had the idea of space and the feeling that i wanted to express I had started with a rough sketch.This is the sketch design of my mask.This is actually a wing that compose of a few feathers. After done the sketch, I started to draw some guide line on my mask so that it is easier for me to colour it. I also used blue colour as the main colour for this mask as I think that this colour really suit the feeling that I was trying to express.

Concept:

The space that I choose to enter is a carnival that is very crowded and I was surrounded by many people that was having fun and good time but eventually this situation had make me feel that I was very lonely and there is no one care about how me feel (or other people feel) as they having their own good time.At that very moment, I saw a feather liked costume and suddenly many thing had came thru and struck my mind while I am sad. The reason I having the wing around my eyes and at my forehead because I was always wan to get out of the sad and down moment of my life as soon as possible so that I can be strong and continue my journey with joyful moment.Therefore by having a wing, represent that I wanted a wing to fly out of the horrible situation (sad moment) .Of cause when I sad and moody, I will also cry, therefore there is tears on my mask.

If you look closely, the colour of feathers that located at the upper part of the eyes and lower part of eye are different , this is because the lower part is not feather but tears that shaped like feather and I only drawn a line of black tear from the eye.This is because I dont like to show people that I actually crying when I was moody and sad, I want to give people an impression that I am strong.Therefore if you watch the mask from afar, you can only see the mask is like a carnival mask which is decorated by blue feathers without notices there is actually black lined tear and feather like shaped tears under the eyes or a mask that give people a feeling the person who wearing the mask( me) is calm and stable.But when you get closer can closer to the mask(means get knowing me), eventually you will see the tears (which means the true feeling of mine)

   I truely feel grateful that I was giving an opportunity to do this project as thru this project, I really feel the friendship among us are closer and this project also take us to a higher step and bring us closer to knowing more about who ourselves really are.
